Everyone is talking about Seabrook!

Summer has officially arrived and the sun is making the Norhtwest look more gorgeous than ever. While everyone is seeking for a good getaway spot to relax and recharge, two widely respected and distributed magazines, Seattle Magazine and AAA Journey, featured Seabrook in their latest issues as the (Pacific Northwest) ultimate beach destination for this summer.

Kate Calamusa from the Seattle Magazine spent a weekend at Seabrook enjoying a complete beach town experience with her husband. With the 4th of July just around the corner, she previews Seabrook's unique way of celebrating independence day for anyone interested in unwinding on the coast for the holiday. You can view the text in full by simply clicking here.

But the Seabrook hype doesn't stop there. Washington State's "youngest little place by the sea" (as they call it) was the main departure destination recommended by the AAA Journey in their most recent issue of the bimonthly magazine. What over 1,200,000 readers could see in the print edition of Journey, you can now exclusively see online by following this link!

Is enjoying the summer out at Seabrook really A Shore Thing? Well, over 300 nature enthusiasts have already decided to spend July and August playing in the waves. Plus, Seattle Magazine and AAA definitely seem to think so. And we all know how reliable AAA is!

You have to take advantage of the cherished Northwestern sunshine! Whether
you want to Sea's The Day, take your Sweetheart on a Moon Dance, or have a Whale of an Adventure, be sure to visit our Seabrook Cottage Rentals website to reserve your place by the ocean for this summer.

Kiplinger's Top Four Questions to Ask When Buying a Second Home

In an e-article recently published by Kiplinger.com, they outlined the four most important questions to ask yourself when considering buying a second home. Suffice to say, we couldn't agree more!

First: How accessible is the property?
Kiplinger: Gas prices dim the appeal of a place that's hundreds of miles away. You can usually hop a cheap flight to Florida, but that's not necessarily true of Corpus Christi, Tex., or Durango, Colo.

Seabrook: We always stress to potential buyers that the way to reap the most benefit from a second home or investment property is by using it as often as possible. For investment properties, it makes sense to maximize both income and time spent at your property by spending that time visiting during the off-peak seasons. Nevertheless, Seabrook inherently fosters lifelong memories and how can you create memories without investing some time in a little R&R?

Second: Is the community well planned?
Kiplinger: In rural areas, a beautiful new cabin may adjoin a cluster of rusting trailers.

Seabrook: We've got plans for everything!
Third: Is the house in good shape?
Kiplinger: New construction is fine, but an older place or summer home is likely to be the victim of deferred maintenance and premature wear. Instead of asking for a price concession, you may be better off asking the seller to hire a carpenter and a painter.

Seabrook: New construction = ready to enjoy/rent ASAP

Fourth: Will you feel at home there?
Kiplinger: "[...] nothing beats a visit to see if the locale offers what you're looking for."

Seabrook: On numerous occasions, our homeowners have said to us that they know their neighbors in Seabrook better than they do their neighbors at their primary residence. This goes back to our detail-oriented planning, but simply put our pedestrian-friendly town plan does wonders for neighborly relations. This being said, we know neighborly relations doesn't always imply a feeling of home. We firmly believe home is where the heart is and we invite you to take Kiplinger's advice. Your heart will not want to leave!

Lil's Pantry Opens With A Bang!

Seabrook's newest amenity, a market named Lil's Pantry, opened its doors this past weekend to the crowds of clam diggers visiting Seabrook’s beach.

Proprietors Bob and Pam Bennett said, “Although we were fairly well prepared, the clamming traffic caused us to run out of a few things. The customers still seemed very happy and largely satisfied with the items we have to offer.”

Monday evening after the busy weekend, Mona Brewer kindly volunteered her experience of the added convenience Lil’s Pantry brings to Seabrook:

Hi All!

We recently stayed in Ella’s Escape cottage, went clam digging, and had a great weekend. As we were leaving, we stopped in at the new store and with the help of the employees, we decided on the Rosemary Garlic Linguine to go with our razor clam white sauce. I have attached a picture of the clam digging group that stayed in the cottage (except for me, I was taking the picture) and the finished linguine dish. Thanks for having the great pastas in your store. It sure added to our dinner. It was the first Seabrook experience for our friends but one of many stays for my husband and I.

Thanks for a wonderful place to stay!

Mona Brewer

Thank YOU Mona for such a glowing recommendation!

---------

Lil’s Pantry will feature the following items as they are available:

  • Meat, fish & poultry
  • Cheese and dairy products
  • Fresh fruits & vegetables
  • Breads & cereals
  • Sauces & seasonings, dips & salsas
  • Pasta & rice
  • Sweets & treats
  • Full-service deli
  • Espresso bar (plus seasonal gelato & ice cream!)
  • Sodas, beer & wine

Visit the Lil's Pantry website to order food online and have it ready for you when you arrive at Seabrook.

How to Earn 1 LEED Point

Shown above are the footings of Seabrook's NW Glen's lot 159. DO NOT be fooled, these are no ordinary footings! 40% of these foundation footings are made up of fly ash rather than concrete. What is exactly is fly ash and why do I want incinerated insects in my foundation, you may ask.

Don't worry, here is the technical scoop:

Fly Ash

Power plants fueled by coal produce more than half of the electricity we consume in the United States today. But in addition to electricity, these plants produce a material that is fast becoming a vital ingredient for improving the performance of a wide range of concrete products. That material is fly ash. Fly ash is comprised of the non-combustible mineral portion of coal. When coal is consumed in a power plant, it is first ground to the fineness of powder. Blown into the power plant’s boiler, the carbon is consumed — leaving molten particles rich in silica, alumina and calcium. These particles solidify as microscopic, glassy spheres that are collected from the power plant’s exhaust before they can “fly” away — hence the product’s name: Fly Ash.

Chemically, fly ash is a pozzolan. When mixed with lime (calcium hydroxide), pozzolans combine to form cementitious compounds. Concrete containing fly ash becomes stronger, more durable, and more resistant to chemical attack. Mechanically, fly ash also pays dividends for concrete production. Because fly ash particles are small, they effectively fill voids. Because fly ash particles are hard and round, they have a “ball bearing” effect that allows concrete to be produced using less water. Both characteristics contribute to enhanced concrete workability and durability. Finally, fly ash use creates significant benefits for our environment. Fly ash use conserves natural resources and avoids landfill disposal of ash products. By making concrete more durable, life cycle costs of roads and structures are reduced. Furthermore, fly ash use partially displaces production of other concrete ingredients, resulting in significant energy savings and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

That, my friends is how you earn one LEED point toward LEED certification!

Seabrook Local Saves 5-Year Old Boy

On Saturday afternoon, Seabrook resident Chris Keefer rescued a 5-year old boy who became trapped under a couch-sized boulder as he pushed his 7-year old friend to safety. After exhausting customary methods, rescuers looked for local help to lift the seemingly immobile rock off the young boy's leg. Chris thought quickly and drove a nearby forklift onto the beach and elevated the boulder long enough to bring the boy to safety. Everyone in Pacific Beach is grateful for Chris’ quick thinking and his heroic efforts!

Thank you, Chris. You're the man!

Seabrook's Winter Wonderland

The amount of beauty and happiness resulting from a storm, something with such a powerful and often destructive persona, is truly amazing. The past weekend at Seabrook was no exception. Seabrook guests and locals alike joined at the amphitheater to play in the nearly 6 inches of snow. Here are some great photos from the most snow Seabrook has ever seen:

CLAM-O-RAMA at Seabrook!

With fall upon us, good things are in store on Seabrook’s shore: Razor Clams!

This Northwest rite of passage separates the hardy from the fair-weather folks. Digging for these elusive shellfish is often messy, time consuming and quite possibly the most fun you’ve had at the beach in a long time! The first of these rare, short-season “digs” is set for Oct. 16-18, so get your clam guns (and muck boots!) ready.

The Pacific razor clam (Siliqua patula) is found along beaches from California to Alaska. In Washington, the biggest you’ll get is about six inches long. They are exceptionally meaty and delicious for clam chowder, breaded and sautéed, or prepared in curries.

If you’re new to the ritual, here’s what you’ll need;

  • A current Washington State Fishing License (most sporting goods stores sell them—choose from short term or annual shellfish licenses, or get them instantly online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/). Wear it when you’re clamming, on a lanyard is best.
  • A clam gun or shovel, found at sporting goods stores and Fred Meyer ($22)
  • Waterproof clothing is recommended: waders, slicker or windbreaker, rubber boots, hat
  • One “container” per person for clam storage (the catch limit is 15 per day): this can be a hip-clip net, a plastic shopping bag, a gallon Ziploc, your makeup bag, etc
  • A good flashlight or lantern for post-sunset digs (they help reveal “show”)
  • Access to a tide chart to see the low tide times (optimal for clamming) for Pacific Beaches

Tips to know:

  • Look for “show” in the sand, slightly raised and dimpled areas indicative of where clams are dwelling
  • People often use sticks or baseball bats to tap on the sand to stimulate “show”
  • Cover the hole on the T-bar of your clam gun just before pulling up on the tube, to create a vacuum seal
  • Dig fast, and dig deep—what may not be initially revealed might be lurking just inches below
  • You break it, you buy it: Casualties such as cracked clamshells, tube-induced dismemberment and catching itty bitty clams still count against your limit.
  • Kids (under age 15) don’t need a license, so get them working! Kids make great clam sleuths.

The beach directly fronting Seabrook is part of the Mocrocks beach district as referenced in the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations. As you check for dig dates, make sure they apply to Mocrocks if you’re Seabrook bound. The 2008 tentatively slated dates for Seabrook/Mocrocks are: Oct. 16-18, Nov. 13-16, and Dec. 11-14. Book your cottage now and get ready for some clam-o-rama!

If you need “Clamming 101,” let the Seabrook Cottage Rentals office know and we’ll try our best to get a neighbor to show you the way.

Walk-able Communities as a Solution to Suburban Sprawl

Although still under development, towns such as Seabrook illustrate the potential of a walk-able community.

In the news, as high gas prices and far-reaching suburbs are costing its residents more to drive from point to point, many people are taking inventory on the places they live, looking for close-to-home solutions that make shopping, working, and living more proximal. There are health, environmental, and social nuances of walk-able communities that are distinctly different than its counterpart of suburban sprawl.

As both urban and suburban leaders seek solutions to creating more walk-able communities, everything from richer mass transit to increased neighborhood commerce is being considered to meet its residents’ basic needs. Whole universities are cropping up with formal disciplines in New Urbanism as new ideas (which are actually quite traditional) are implemented and movements such as the Congress for the New Urbanism are widely embraced by civic decision-makers.

Some of the characteristics of walk-able communities include:

  • town centers – a quiet, pleasant main street with a set of hearty, healthy stores
  • areas designed for people first, cars second
  • neighborhoods with mixed income and mixed-use housing
  • safe, adequate and appealing public space for people to gather and to sit
  • easy access for people of all ages and abilities
  • main streets that are speed-controlled and interconnected, or laid out in a grid
  • many people walking

Vacation Rental Industry Booming

The economy may feel a bit unstable, but vacation rental homes are enjoying a rock solid flow of business.

Recent news reports from coast to coast describe how travelers are doing the math and realizing a win-win by utilizing a vacation rental home as an alternative to a hotel vacation stay. Vacation Rentals offer travelers more well-appointed space for their dollar and a more rememberable experience thanks to amenities typically not afforded by hotels. Also, according to the Vacation Rental Managers Association (http://www.vrma.com/), the vacation rental industry saw a 17.4% revenue increase in 2007. Correlating with these trends, Seabrook Cottage Rentals realized a 192% increase in nightly rentals in the first 6 months of ’08 compared to ’07.

Check out some related headlines here:

Park Construction Continues

With the intent of increasing drainage from the lawn at Crescent Park, the Seabrook Landscaping crew initiated construction on April 7th, 2008. After significant measures were taken, including re-grading the soil (shown in picture two and three), hydroseed was applied Wednesday, April 23rd.

“Hydroseeding,” according to AllAboutLawns.com, “is a process by which seed, water, fertilizer, fiber mulch, and sometimes lime are blended together in a tank and applied onto a prepared lawn area through a spraying hose. Once sprayed, the wet fiber mulch will help create a bond to the soil and provide the seeds with a water retaining blanketing-coat while protecting it from sunlight, wind, and erosion. As the grass seeds begin to germinate, the fiber mulch will slowly decompose adding nutrients to the soil.”

Additionally, Greg ‘Woo’ Haskins, Director of Seabrook Landscaping, said, “Although the lawn will not be ready for use for another 4-6 weeks (weather depending), we should see a blanket of green appearing over the next couple of days.” Haskins continued by explaining, “The process has been very smooth and we have not been confronted with an obstacle we couldn’t conquer.” He concluded the interview with, “I am confident we have accomplished exactly what we set out to do.”

Great work Seabrook Landscaping and thanks for making our park an even better place to play!

Seabrook's Clock Hours at the Beach

February 5th and 6th, Seabrook hosted the inaugural 'Seabrook's Clock Hours at the Beach'. We invited every real estate agent in the state of Washington to join us for two days of learning and fun Seabrook style. Remarkably, the class filled up in two days!

The purpose of the event was to give real estate agents an opportunity to earn continuing education clock hours in a very unorthodox manner - vacationing at the beach! Seabrook hosted 35 agents for a night and gave them a true opportunity to experience Seabrook at its finest. Miles, from Cafe Tashtego, served our guests in his newly opened ocean view restaurant and Paul Bouma and company provided very entertaining Jazz during the wine and cheese hour in the sales office. Ultimately, it was a great success. Fortunately, for those who did not get an opportunity to partake in the February event, we will be hosting a very similar event on March 11th and 12th. For more information, please contact Chris Murphy at chrism@seabrookwa.com. Hope to see you there!

In addition to being featured (for the second year) in Seattle Magazine's 'Best of 2007,' the Seabrook team decided to put our show on the road and participate in Bellevue's Recreational Property Investment Show. The event was sponsored by Guidant Financial, who hosted seminars on 'how to use IRA savings to purchase recreational investment properties.' Thanks to an extensive radio campiagn, the event drew roughly 800 visitors! We were very happy to share the story of Seabrook with the guests and for those who visited our booth, keep your eyes peeled for a special treat in the mail! Have a great weekend!

January Clam Digging at Seabrook

Happy New Year! You may wonder what is one of the most talked about activities to do at Seabrook during the winter? Clamming!

According to Dan Ayers, with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), "three ocean beaches are tentatively scheduled to open for razor clam digging later this month."

Seabrook's closest beach, Morocks -- which includes Iron Springs, Roosevelt Beach, Pacific Beach and Moclips -- is closed for January to ensure clam surplus for spring digs. But, Copalis Beach -- extending from the Grays Harbor North Jetty to the Copalis River -- will be open for clamming January 19-20 from noon to midnight each day.

For more information on alternative beaches and late-afternoon tides check out: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/razorclm/season.htm

Come join us for clam digging adventures by day and cozy winter nights bundled by the fire! Hope to see you soon.

Holiday Celebrations at Seabrook

As the holidays got closer, everyone met in the Seabrook office for caroling. Jovial spirits were a plenty as Chris Keefer and father and son duo Wayne and Randy Buehner demonstrated their musical talents. Seabrook residents and visitors accompanied the acoustic guitars in harmony. As you can see, it was a joyous time for all! We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year.

The Calm Before The Storm

In true Washington fashion, Mother Nature demonstrated the dichotomy of her powers by bringing Seabrook a beautiful dusting of snow preceding the rains that left Gray's Harbor County without power for days. Fortunately, thanks to sound construction practices, Seabrook came out the storm unscathed. Here are some highlights of a snowy day at Seabrook.
